Thanks to Sister Mehboba Rawi, our guest speaker last Saturday March 8

Adjudged by a major Australian newspaper [SMH] in January 2005 as one of fifty Australians 'who matter', Mahboba Rawi founded the aid organisation, Mahboba's Promise, in 1998 in order to assist Afghanistan's people as they rebuild their lives after two decades of war and oppression. Mahboba has come a long way, and has had an effect on many thousands of lives. She has set fine example, she is humanitarian, and an outstanding human being. She has done work which has brought together all sections of the Australian Community, and if ever this was needed it is now.

~ Fundraising Dinner ~

Assalam Alaikum,

The CIC held the first fundraising dinner of year last Saturday, the 1st of March 2008. By all accounts it was a huge success, keep watching this website for more information about the dinners outcome and upcoming fundraising evets.

The CIC Executive Committe wishes to thank all who attended and donated, the donations collected will go far by way of addressing the security issues and building plans of the CIC building. Thanks also to all the untiring volunteers who made this dinner the great success it was.

For those who could not attend, donations can still be made by clicking on the PayPal button above. Donations made this way are safe and can be made even if you do not have a PayPal account. PayPal accepts Visa and Mastercard payments. Alternatively you can make a bank deposit as detailed further on below
.

The main objective of these fundraising dinners is to raise sufficient funds to complete the outstanding work that is required to move the Centre and surroundings from something resembling a derelict construction site to one that portrays a fully functioning premise.

Sadly, in the past few months there were a number of acts of vandalism and hate that resulted in windows being smashed numerous times, exterior lighting being damaged and storage containers broken into.

We are not sure why these hateful acts are directed against our community. On each occasion, the police have advised us that the ever presence of construction material, the untidy & unkempt appearance of the site along with lack of genuine presence / activities at the Centre convey the environment as an abandoned site that attracts such acts of vandalism and break-ins. As such, the aim of the Fundraising Dinner is to raise $100,000 to complete the courtyard as well as implementing security aspects around the site that includes fencing the boundary perimeter therefore discouraging such acts.

This year also, apart from your donations and pledges, CIC will be accepting loans from members of the community in order to raise the targeted amount to complete the necessary work. Delaying such work due to lack of funding (as we have seen over the years) only serves to increase the cost of completing it the next time we attempt to do so.

CIC will endeavour to repay all such loans within the fixed period as nominated by the individual lender(s).

For those who are not be able to attend the Fundraiser but still wish to contribute to this worthy cause, they may either forward their donations to the Treasurer or directly deposit the amount into CIC's bank account, details of which are as follows:

Westpac Bank
BSB:              032719
Account No.: 153856

As always tax deductible receipts will be given for all donations.

Wassalam

Book: Australia’s Muslim Cameleers
Pioneers of the Inland
1860s–1930s
Philip Jones and Anna Kenny

This superbly illustrated book brings to life the vital role that Muslim cameleers from Afghanistan and British India played in pioneering transport and communication routes across outback Australia’s vast expanses. The cameleers’ small Muslim communities were a feature of Australian outback towns for more than 50 years.

Australia’s Muslim Cameleers: Pioneers of the Inland 1860s–1930s is a rich pictorial history of these men, their religious and cultural life, and their relations with Indigenous and European Australians. Many of the images and artefacts in this fascinating account are published here for the first time. The book contains a biographical listing of more than 1200 cameleers.
